A few years ago some genius decided to build Las Vegas in the desert, so to me seeing any unique humidification technology at CES is a very welcome sight. It just so happened that a Korean company showed off a device called Moss Air, which, as the name suggests, uses real moss to purify the air. It also has a humidification function that can spray outwards or replenish moisture inside the plants. In short, you get an air-purifying humidifier that also doubles as an attractive miniature mist terrarium on your desk.
According to Mosslab, the startup behind the device, the moss not only converts carbon dioxide back into oxygen, but it also effectively removes fine dust from the air. Even better, the plant can apparently break down harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds) into sugars for food. Technically, though, it’s the bacteria in the moss that are actually responsible for this process, according to a study conducted by the University of Toronto.
The Moss Air has an LED illuminated compartment under a removable clear cover that allows you to easily install or replace the Moss panel. At the top, you can plug the vent with the included magnetic ball to switch to terrarium mode, where it will mist the moss for 60 seconds every three hours. If you need to humidify your surroundings, simply slide the ball over it to mist it outward.
The Moss Air has a 1,600mAh battery that can run for up to around 8 hours on a single charge, or until the water in the 400ml water tank is empty – you can pull it out from the bottom to refill or replace the paper filters (three included) . Of course, you can also use the device while it’s plugged in (via USB-C), but having a built-in battery means you can take your pet moss with you wherever you go.
The Moss Air will launch on Amazon in late January 2024, and you’ll be able to choose between black and white. At $99, the product seems a bit pricey for what it does, but at least the demand is there when it was priced at $79 earlier on Kickstarter and Indiegogo.
We will provide live coverage of CES 2024, which will be held in Las Vegas from January 6th to 12th.Get all the latest news from the show here.
