OpenAI and Reddit announced a partnership on Thursday that will allow OpenAI to surface Reddit discussions in ChatGPT and allow Reddit to bring artificial intelligence-driven features to users. The two companies have signed a new agreement. As part of the agreement, OpenAI will also become an advertising partner on Reddit, meaning it will serve ads on the platform.
The deal is similar to Reddit’s February deal, which was worth $60 million. A Reddit spokesperson declined to disclose the terms of the OpenAI deal to Engadget, and OpenAI did not respond to a request for comment.
OpenAI is increasingly forming partnerships with publishers to gain access to materials to continue training its artificial intelligence models. In the past few weeks alone, the company has Financial Times and Point Dash Meredith. Last year it also partnered with German publisher Axel Springer to train its model on news from: Politico and business insider in the United States and Bild and world in Germany.
Under the new arrangement, OpenAI will be able to access Reddit’s data API, which the company says will provide it with “real-time, structured and unique content from Reddit.” It’s unclear what artificial intelligence capabilities Reddit will build into its platform through this partnership. A Reddit spokesperson declined to comment.
Access to Reddit’s data became a contentious issue last year after the company announced it would begin charging developers to use its API. As a result, dozens of third-party Reddit clients were forced to shut down, and thousands of Reddit subreddits were shut down in protest. At the time, Reddit maintained its stance that large AI companies were scraping its material for free. Since then, Reddit has been monetizing its data through such deals with Google and OpenAI, whose progress in training artificial intelligence models depends on having access to this data.
