Snapchat is offering subscribers a new perk powered by artificial intelligence: Bitmoji versions of your pets. Unfortunately, the feature isn’t called “petmoji,” and it allows users to take a photo of their four-legged friend to create a cartoon-like avatar to accompany their Bitmoji in Snap Maps.
Based on screenshots shared by the company, users appear to be able to choose from several different variations of AI-generated images after sharing a photo of their pet. While it should allow users to create something that looks similar to their IRL pet, there will be far less customization than your own human-inspired Bitmoji. (It’s unclear whether Snap will one day launch branded pet accessories for animal avatars, as it does for human Bitmoji.)
The addition is also the latest example of how Snap is embracing artificial intelligence capabilities in its subscription service. Since the launch of Snapchat+ in 2022, the company has used the premium service to experiment with generative AI features, including the MyAI Assistant as well as camera-driven features like Snapchat. The company announced in December that the number of subscribers to Snapchat+ had surpassed 100.
Elsewhere, Snap has added some updates for non-subscribers. The app adds new template features to make editing clips easier, and new swipe-based gestures for faster sending and editing of snaps. Snapchat will also support longer video uploads for Stories and Spotlight. In-app capture can now take up to three minutes, while the app will support uploads of up to five minutes.
