Oppo Find X7 Ultra is the first phone to feature two periscope zoom cameras

There was a time when smartphone manufacturers were rushing to promote quad cameras, and most of them did so by adding a mediocre fourth camera – usually for macro shots, if not a monochrome filter or just As for the depth sensor. Nowadays, though, we’re blessed with legitimate quad “main” lenses on some flagship phones, so brands need to get more creative to further differentiate themselves. Oppo, for its part, decided to equip the new Find X7 Ultra with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 with two periscope telephoto cameras instead of the three-camera system of the previous model.

According to Oppo, the Find X7 Ultra’s “HyperTone camera system” has the same 50-megapixel resolution on all four rear Hasselblad cameras, thanks to their relatively larger sensors compared to competitors . The main imager uses Sony’s second-generation 1-inch sensor LYT-900, which is more efficient in terms of power consumption and thermal performance. Supplemented by f/1.8 aperture, OIS (optical image stabilization), 23mm focal length, and 50% reduction in lens reflections. This ultra-wide-angle camera features a 1/1.95-inch Sony LYT-600 sensor and f/2.0 aperture, making it one of the fastest cameras in its class. It has a 14mm equivalent focal length and a focal length of up to 4cm.

Then we’re left with just two periscope telephoto cameras. The first is a 3x optical zoom, equipped with a 1/1.56-inch Sony IMX980 sensor – apparently, “about three times larger than the competition.” You also get f/2.6 aperture along with “prism OIS,” 65mm focal length and 25cm focal length – handy for portraits and product photos. Then the 6x optical zoom periscope is equipped with a 1/2.51-inch Sony IMX858 sensor, an f/4.3 aperture, a focal length of 135mm, a focal length of 35cm, and 稜鏡OIS. Oppo says the Find X7 Ultra features 12x AI-enhanced zoom and can handle a universal equivalent focal length range of 14mm to 270mm.

OPPO also claims to have made some major breakthroughs in mobile photography. Most notably, it’s finally launching a “HyperTone Imaging Engine,” which is said to improve HDR computational photography results and avoid overexposure and oversharpening. This was apparently developed over two years with input from professional photographers and color experts. As one spokesperson put it, it’s all about “merging objective qualities with subjective emotions.” Even better, the HyperTone imaging engine will eventually be rolled out to some existing Oppo devices, namely the Find N and Reno series, based on compatibility.

Other areas of improvement include quality consistency across the entire zoom range (especially in low-light environments), and more realistic portrait shots thanks to the new Hasselblad Portrait Mode. For the latter, Oppo boldly promises to deliver “cinematic bokeh with foreground and background depth,” and instead of getting fake bokeh and poor edge detection, it’s down to a hair’s accuracy, plus minimal shutter lag as award.

Oppo has also launched a new “Hasselblad Master Mode”, which is based on the features of the Hasselblad X2D 100C medium format mirrorless camera. You can adjust saturation, contrast, sharpness and halo controls to create your preferred style, as well as other shooting features such as manual ISO, shutter speed, EV, focus and white balance. This main mode also offers “RAW MAX” capture (pending OTA update), which supports 13 stops of dynamic range and 16-bit color depth in the BT2020 color space for each 50-megapixel still image.

Find X7 Ultra is available in three colors: “Ocean Blue,” “Tan” and “Custom Black,” all with vegan leather casings (the black version has decorative stitching). Despite the extra periscope camera, ample 5,000mah battery, and wireless charging support (recharges in 60 minutes with 50W charging; twice as much with 100W SuperVOOC wired charging), the device is virtually identical to the Find X6 The Pro is similar in weight and thickness. This is thanks to a slimmer wireless charging coil, thinner vegan leather, and an improved logic board stacking design. Oppo is also able to keep the entire rear camera module tight by using “single-sided magnets” to avoid interference between the three OIS parts.

The new phone also features Oppo’s brightest ever QHD (3,168 x 1,440) panel, with a maximum outdoor brightness of 1,600 nits and a local peak brightness of 4,500 nits for HDR. This 6.82-inch AMOLED panel supports the common 120Hz refresh rate and ultra-low touch latency, as well as “rain touch” support for wet hands (with IP68 dustproof and waterproof rating). While the three-level slider is still there, it’s been redesigned as a “VIP slider” for quickly changing notification modes, or cutting off camera, location, and microphone access for an extreme privacy mode.

To our surprise, Oppo has no current plans to launch the Find X7 Ultra outside of China, so you’ll have to buy one from an importer. For your reference, the price of this model ranges from 5,999 Yuan (~$845) with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage to 6,999 Yuan (~$990) with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. All three options are available for pre-order now, with a retail release on January 12th. A special version with satellite calling support will also be launched at the end of March, but no price was mentioned.

For those on a budget but still want the same great looks, there’s the base model of the Find X7 powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 processor. It only has three cameras on the back: a 50-megapixel main camera (possibly equipped with Sony’s 1/1.4-inch LYT-T808 sensor; f/2.0; OIS), a 64-megapixel 3x periscope zoom camera (f/2.6; prism) OIS; 1/2-inch sensor) and 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.0; 119 degrees). It also has a slightly smaller 6.78-inch OLED screen with a lower resolution of 2,780 x 1,264. Not surprisingly, this model does not have the VIP slider feature.

The Find X7 starts at 3,999 yuan (about $560), offering 12GB RAM and 256GB storage, and goes up to 4,999 yuan (about $700), offering 16GB RAM + 1TB storage. In addition to the “sea blue” and “tan” designs, you can also consider purple and black options, both of which feature glass backs.
