If you’re a cross between a virtual reality enthusiast and a major league baseball fan, this is good news for you. MLB has launched Home Run Derby VR on the Meta Quest Store, available for Quest 2, Quest 3 and Quest Pro users. The game was previously released on Meta’s App Labs.
MLB Home Run Derby VR gives players the opportunity to explore 30 different ballparks and play up to 100 different levels. MLB said in its announcement: “This upgraded version of the game offers an exciting opportunity to experience each field like never before, with advanced motion controls and realistic batting mechanics that allow users to virtually hit the ball. hand area, imitating their favorite batsman from anywhere in the world.” .
The game also offers a multiplayer mode for up to 4 players or a tournament mode for up to 8 players. Users can choose a winner based on score, fastest exit velocity, or longest home run. Additionally, achievements can unlock bat skins, batting gloves, and more for their meta avatars. MLB Home Run Derby VR costs $30 in the Meta Quest Store, but non-Meta users can purchase it on the Rift or Steam VR platforms.
The launch isn’t MLB’s first foray into VR: the organization held its first “virtual ballpark” regular season game in September. The experience allows viewers to “enter” the stadium and watch avatars corresponding to live games between the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Angels.
