LG usually shows off a ton of new TVs at CES every year, but they’re usually more traditional flat-screen TVs. This year in Las Vegas, in addition to the M and G series updates, the company also unveiled something completely different. OLED T is what the company says is the first wireless transparent OLED TV, featuring 4K resolution and LG’s wireless audio and video transmission technology. The device also has a contrast screen that scrolls down into a box at its base that you can raise or lower by pressing the base.
OLED T is powered by LG’s new Alpha 11 AI processor, which delivers four times the performance of the previous generation chip. According to the company, the additional performance improves graphics performance by 70% and processing speed by 30%. The OLED T model works with the company’s zero-connection box, which debuted with last year’s M3 OLED, and sends video and audio wirelessly to the TV. You connect all your streaming devices and gaming consoles to the box instead of your TV.
The base of the OLED T houses down-firing speakers that sound surprisingly good, along with a few other components. There are also backlights, but you can turn them on for a completely transparent look. LG says the TV will be available in freestanding, wall-mounted and wall-mounted options.
At first, some of the visual effects on the OLED T were a little disconcerting. The singer on the transparent display appears to be actually in the room – in miniature form, of course. Things like fish tanks look a little more comfortable, and movie clips are clear and vivid. LG also placed a so-called T-Bar on the OLED T, which adds chyron-like content like news, weather, song titles, and more at the bottom, while the rest of the screen remains clear.
Samsung also released a transparent TV at CES 2024, but this version is Micro OLED. It also looks bright and sharp, but there’s also no word on when it will be available or how much it will cost. LG also didn’t talk about pricing, but the company did say it plans to sell OLED TVs in 2024.
