Friends, I am not what you would call a seasoned overlander, which is a term I now understand when you are camping in your truck. Part of the overlanding process is that you actually sleep in a foldable tent on the roof of the truck you’re driving. Now, I’m going to be honest and say that sleeping on the roof of a truck, even with elastic straps to keep you from falling, is not what I would call a fun weekend adventure. But that’s exactly the market Jackery is catering to with its new concept solar roof tent, which was demonstrated at CES 2024 in Las Vegas and will be launched as an actual product by the end of 2024.
The Jackery roof tent solar generator is equipped with a 1,000W solar panel (25% efficiency). Unlike the flimsy panels you currently buy, these are rigid slide-out units that should provide a sturdier canopy for sleeping. Once you park and open the tent, the panel connects to the Explorer 1,000 Plus generator. It holds 1,264 watt-hours of power and delivers an output of up to 2,000 watts, enough to power a 900-watt cooker for an hour. Additionally, you can daisy-chain additional batteries to further increase storage for longer trips away from power outlets and/or civilization.
There are no specific details yet on how much it will cost at retail, or how much it will change from the initial demo. But if you’re a big fan of sleeping on top of your pickup truck and aren’t worried about the terrifying prospect of rolling over and plummeting several feet to the ground, this might be the product for you.
We will provide live coverage of CES 2024, which will be held in Las Vegas from January 6th to 12th.Get all the latest news from the show here.
