In a very relevant moment, NASA spent three months working to open the lid of an asteroid sample container to send it into deep space and back. Same, NASA, same: I’ve always struggled with pickle cans.

Last week, the space agency finally gained access to the asteroid Bennu sample container, and on Friday it released high-resolution images from its Touch-and-Go Sample Acquisition Mechanism (TAGSAM), revealing a delightful array of dust and rocks. Depart Bennu aboard the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft.

The TAGSAM is housed in a special glove box to protect samples from contamination, and only certain tools are approved for use with it. The team ultimately had to develop new tools to open the fasteners. Tapping on the side of the kitchen countertop has no effect.
