The next morning: CES 2024 kicks off, Samsung and LG unveil transparent displays

Long live Las Vegas! I’m contractually obligated to write about this in at least one post at CES 2024. So I will solve it as soon as possible. This year, LG and Samsung dropped the bombshells, both showing off similar (but technically distinct) transparent displays for the assembled press and analysts to see and ponder… Why.

Of course, I’m cynical. LG first launched wireless transparent OLED. The 77-inch OLED T also leverages the company’s work on wireless transmission technology, reducing the need for separate power supply wiring. To ensure that the display still delivers adequate blacks, the contrast screen scrolls down into a box at the bottom of the OLED T.

A few hours later, Samsung unveiled its own transparent display, but it uses MicroLED. Samsung is showcasing transparent MicroLED displays side by side with transparent OLED (oh, snap) and transparent LCD models to emphasize MicroLED’s brighter capabilities. Oh, and it’s not just bezel-less, it’s frameless.

Many questions remain: pricing, availability, and why? LG and Samsung have a responsibility to justify extremely expensive monitors.

Remember to follow all the big CES reveals (and insider views) here.

You know what’s also transparent? Cat flap. Don’t worry, it’s also high-tech and expensive. Flappie’s artificial intelligence cat door automatically locks if your kitty attempts to bring in captured prey. The Flap uses sensors and cameras to detect if your cat has a gift — a pretty damn gift — for you. Flappie says it has compiled a “unique and proprietary” data set over the years, which ensures its AI-driven detection system is accurate more than 90 percent of the time. Flappie plans to launch pet doors in Switzerland and Germany later this spring, but plans to launch in the United States as well. Price is $399.

This looks… good? Samsung also released Music Frame. It’s a wireless speaker that does double duty as a home décor, just like Samsung’s popular Frame TV series. But there’s no screen here.On the contrary, you literally Use it as a frame for printed photos or artwork. There’s no word yet on Music Frame’s pricing or availability, but expect to hear more in 2024.

Apple Vision Pro will be available in the US on February 2 for $3,499

    What is CES?

I love when Apple makes its own announcements at CES. The highly anticipated device will arrive in the United States on February 2, the company said. Pre-orders for the mixed reality headset start at $3,499 (256GB storage) and will open on January 19th. The Apple Watch was launched about 10 years ago. Anyway, back to CES.

JBL adds touchscreen cases to 3 new wireless headphone models

Of course you can, just add a screen.

JBL showed off a set of truly wireless headphones at last year’s CES, complete with a smart box equipped with a touch screen. It must be popular because the company is bringing the feature to three more devices. Live Buds 3, Live Beam 3 and Live Flex 3 will all come with a smart case and customizable adaptive noise cancellation, LDAC support for high-resolution listening, six microphones for calls, wireless charging and multiple Click Bluetooth connection.
