The mini-console trend that started with the little NES Classic has slowed down for the most part, but there are still some cute game-filled gadgets popping up. Typical examples are: Plaion and Retro Games Ltd’s 400 Mini. It was just like its name – a smaller version of the Atari 400 – and like its contemporaries, it came with a bunch of games pre-installed.
The device itself is about half the size of the 1979 original, and comes bundled with an updated version of the CX40 Atari joystick, which supports USB so you can use it with other devices. The console also has five USB ports (so you can connect a joystick or keyboard and sideload games) and an HDMI port (so this little piece of yellow plastic can connect to a modern TV).
As for the games included, the 400 Mini comes pre-installed with 25 games spanning Atari’s 8-bit era. This includes things like Belzek, millipede, miner2049er, muleand Star Raiders II. The game also supports some modern conveniences, with the ability to rewind the action and multiple save slots.
Retro Games has previously released smaller versions of the Amiga 500 and Commodore 64 (last year, Atari also released an updated version of the 2600, complete with cartridge support). But if you’re focused on the 400’s blocky form factor, it will be available on March 28 for $119.99 and is available for pre-order now.
