Just four days before the first event was to take place, Formula E stated that the NXT Gen Cup would not be part of this season’s World Championship schedule. A Formula E spokesman said the cancellation was “due to unexpected restrictions facing support series”.
The NXT Gen Cup was scheduled to be part of four European events in Formula E Season 10, including this weekend’s Misano E-Prix doubleheader. However, according to The deal between the Formula E championship and support series organizer Fredrik Lestrup and Lestrup Racing Team has hit a last-minute hiccup.
As a result, the electric Mini Cooper SE-based NXT Gen Cup – which debuted at several events last year – is temporarily off the schedule. Formula E previously ran a Jaguar I-Pace eTrophy support series from 2018 to 2020, but it proved unsuccessful.
The decision on the NXT Gen Cup has Formula E scrambling to prepare a series of events for fans at the Misano circuit in Italy. Organizers have added pit signings, pit walks and expanded other promotions.
Arguably, for the drivers, engineers and other team members who will be competing in the NXT Gen Cup, they are even more concerned. The race program includes both male and female riders, many of whom are under 17 years old. The track will provide them with valuable experience as Formula E and motorsport as a whole try to feed the next generation of competitors. However, a spokesperson said, “Formula E remains committed to developing the next generation of talent through Girls on the FIA circuit and other impactful initiatives for young people.”
