There are a lot of advantages to streaming TV—you don’t have to stick to a cable contract, and you usually don’t have to pay for a bunch of content you don’t actually want. But if you only subscribe to Netflix and basic Hulu, you might be missing out on some of the benefits of cable TV, namely live sports, local news and the spontaneity of linear (as opposed to on-demand) programming. Live TV streaming services only require an Internet connection and a screen capable of streaming. They also have no contracts and are often cheaper than cable TV (some are even free). We tested more than a dozen services to find the best live TV streaming services, depending on the type of TV watcher you are.
What to look for in a live TV streaming service
How to live stream a TV show
Streaming live TV is a lot like using Netflix. You can access it through an app on your phone, tablet, smart TV or streaming device, and the signal arrives over the Internet. A faster, more stable connection will often provide you with a better experience. Most live TV apps require you to register and pay via your web browser. Afterwards, you can launch the app on your device.

When I started doing my cord-cutting research, I was shocked by the price difference between live TV and standard streaming apps like Netflix or Peacock. The latter costs between $5 and $20 per month, while many live TV services cost $75, and can be upwards of $200 with additional benefits, channel packages and extra fees. The higher starting price is largely due to the cost of offering multiple networks – especially sports and local TV stations. And, in the past six months or so, every service except Philo and Sling has increased their base plan prices.

Of the services we tried, only two didn’t include full local channel coverage for subscribers, and one didn’t make an effort to broadcast sports. That’s the Philo, and as you might guess, it’s the cheapest. The next most affordable option is Sling, which only covers three local stations in larger markets, but it still manages to include some top sports channels.
When you sign up with any provider that handles local television, you’ll enter your zip code to ensure you get your area’s broadcast affiliates ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC. Of course, you can also get these stations for free. Almost all modern televisions support radio frequency (RF) connections, also known as coaxial ports, which means if you buy an HD antenna, you’ll receive local broadcast stations like ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC. Since the signal is a digital signal, the reception effect is greatly improved compared to the static rabbit ears era.

One reality that makes my head spin is the sheer number and iteration of existing sports networks. Trying to figure out which network will host the match you want to view can be tricky. Google makes searching easier for sports fans by listing upcoming games (just replace NFL, MLB, NHL, etc. in the search bar). When you click on an event, the TV & Streaming button tells you which network is covering the event.
Just find out if the service you choose carries the regional sports network. Unfortunately, even with add-ons and extra packages, some providers don’t have specific channel lineups at all. It takes a lawyer to understand the ins and outs of streaming rights negotiations, and TV networks leave and return to live TV operators all the time. That said, most major sports events in the United States are covered by ESPN, Fox Sports, TNT, USA and local affiliates.
It’s also worth noting that traditional streaming services have begun adding live sports to their lineups. Peacock shows live Premier League and Sunday Night Football matches. Max now broadcasts select regular season games from the NHL, MLB and NBA for an additional $10 per month. You can watch MLS games with additional content through the Apple TV app, and Apple TV+ also includes some MLB games. Finally, if you subscribe to Paramount Plus, you can watch many of the games you see on CBS Sports. While these options won’t cover as much ground as live TV streaming, they can cover sports needs without adding too much cost.

Dozens of linear programming networks were once only available on cable, including Bravo, BET, Food Network, HGTV, CNN, Lifetime, SYFY and MTV. If you only subscribe to Netflix or Apple TV+, you won’t be able to access this content. But as with sports, standard streamers are starting to incorporate this content into their offerings. After the Warner Bros. merger, Max incorporated some content from HGTV, Discovery and TLC. Peacock has shows from Bravo and Hallmark, and Paramount+ has material from Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central.
Other channels like AMC+ have separate apps. The Discovery+ app gives you 15 free channels for $9 per month. The service called Frndly TV costs just $7 a month and streams shows from A&E, Lifetime, Game Show Network, Vice and about 35 others. Of course, most live TV streaming options will offer a wider list of cable networks, but be aware that you may already be paying for some of these channels – if you only want a certain channel, you can get it more cheaply by subscribing directly Get it.
How to watch live TV for free
We also tested a number of apps that offer free ad-supported television (FAST), including Freevee, Tubi, PlutoTV and Sling Freestream. They allow you to watch a more limited selection of live networks at zero cost. Most don’t even require an email address, let alone a credit card. If you have a Roku device, Amazon Fire TV Stick, or Samsung TV, you can access hundreds of live channels through Roku Channels, the Live tab in Fire TV, or through the Samsung TV Plus app.
Digital Video Recording (DVR)
Every option we offer offers cloud DVR storage, so you don’t need a separate physical device like you normally would with traditional cable. You get unlimited storage for recordings that expire after nine months or one year, or you get a set number of hours (between 50 and 1,000 hours) that you can retain indefinitely. Typically, all you need to do is specify what you want to record and the DVR element will do all the hard work of saving subsequent episodes for you to watch later.
In addition to being able to watch when it’s most convenient for you, you can also fast forward through ads in your recording. In contrast, you can’t skip them on live TV or video on demand (VOD).
Most live TV subscriptions include access to a selection of VOD content, including movies and shows currently streaming on the network you subscribe to. This typically excludes live events, local programming and news programming.But it does let you watch specific episodes of ongoing shows, e.g. Restaurants, drive-ins and dive shops or BET’s standing. Just search for a show in the on-demand library, select an episode and hit play.
Tiers, packages and add-ons
Comparing market to issue ratios is a spreadsheet task. I…made three. Basic plans range from $25 to $80 per month. From there, you can add packages, which are typically groups of live TV channels bundled together by themes such as news, sports, entertainment, or international content. Premium VOD add-ons such as Max, AMC+ and Starz are also available. Each add-on costs an additional $5 to $20 per month, and the rest of the live TV shows can be found just by showing up in the guide. This is where streaming can get expensive quickly, with subscription fees rising from $80 to $200 per month, depending on your options.
How we test
When I start testing guides, I research the most popular and top-rated players in the category and narrow down which ones are worth trying. For paid plans, only six services dominated, so I tried them all. There are far more contenders for free live TV, so I tested four of the most popular ones. After setting up the account using my laptop, I downloaded the apps on a Samsung smart TV running the latest version of the Tizen operating system. I counted coverage of local TV stations and regional sporting events and noted how many of the top cable networks were available last year. I then weighed the price, base package, and available add-ons.
I then looked at how the programming was done in each app’s UI and judged how easy it was to navigate everything from the top to the settings. To test the search feature, I searched for the same few TV shows on BET, Food Network, HGTV, and Comedy Central, since these channels are available on all six providers. I noticed how helpful these searches were, and they quickly led me to Season 6 Episode 13. hometown.
I used the DVR to record entire series and individual movies and watch VOD programs, making sure to test the pause and scan functions. On each sports service, I searched for the same four upcoming NHL, NBA, MLS and NCAA basketball games and used the record option to save the game and replay it a day or two later. Finally, I note any perks or annoying quirks.

Best Free Live TV Streaming Services
Many standard streaming apps have added live components to their lineups. You pay for the service, so it’s not technically “free,” but you don’t have to spend more than necessary to get a certain amount of live TV. Peacock includes some regional NBC stations, and Paramount+ subscribers can watch live CBS programming. The standard Hulu app has a live ABC News channel, and Max now includes a live CNN channel on its service.
Amazon Prime Video includes a Live TV tab, as does the Fire TV interface. And, if you use Roku or Samsung as your smart operating system of choice, their built-in proprietary services include hundreds of live channels at no additional cost.
