Tesla has lowered its range estimates for two Model Y models (Model Y Long Range and Model Y Performance) by 6%. This reduces the Model Y Long Range’s range from 330 miles to 310 miles, and the Model Y Performance’s range from 303 miles to 285 miles. Model Y’s rear-wheel drive system is unaffected and retains its 260-mile range rating,
Tesla has no official explanation for why it lowered its range estimates, but it’s an open secret in the industry that the company tends to exaggerate these metrics. In fact, South Korea does so for exactly this reason. There were also accusations of canceling or minimizing service complaints related to the voyage.
In other words, the company may be making this move to make its range estimates more accurately reflect reality rather than some pie-in-the-sky idea. That’s not to say the old estimates were outright lies. Mileage calculations assume only perfect weather conditions and a perfect driver operating the vehicle at peak efficiency. In the real world, this situation is rare.
The EPA conducts many of these tests and acknowledges that raw driving conditions rarely match real-life variables. To do this, the agency raises or lowers the range of estimates after conducting its own testing. Many manufacturers choose to voluntarily lower range estimates to better meet driver expectations. Tesla seems to have gone in a different direction.
Even Tesla’s algorithm acknowledges these inaccuracies. If you fully charge your Model Y and set a destination 260 miles away, the navigation algorithm will automatically guide you through the Supercharger station as shown below tram. If the range is indeed 330 miles, it doesn’t have to do this.
Currently, these changes only apply to long-range and high-performance Model Y versions. We don’t know if Tesla will revise range estimates for its other vehicles. The company doesn’t have a PR/communications department, so there’s really no one to contact for further information.
