Sony and Siemens disclose XR (Augmented Reality) headsets are partnered with CES 2024. The headset, launching later this year, has been developed with business needs in mind, and that’s evident in many aspects of it.
Sony designed the new headset for businesses, engineers and developers to explore and model 3D environments. It also targets product designers for product iteration testing and prototyping. This is related to Apple Vision Pro and meta-task, more for general consumers to play games or watch movies.Sony is already involved in this market with its products PSVR2.
Sony’s headphones come with a Qualcomm XR2+ Gen 2 chipset and a 4K OLED microdisplay. Unlike its competitors, it also has a set of physical controls. There’s a wearable ring accessory to wear, as well as a stylus/controller hybrid.
My personal favorite feature of this headset is its reversible visor. Other mainstream headphones are difficult to remove, but Sony’s ones come with flip-up displays. Whenever you need to jump into the real world for a while, you can easily prop up the face interface without taking off the entire headset. This could be a quality-of-life feature for professionals who must quickly jump from VR to a computer screen.
While Sony’s headphones may not steal the show Apple and its Vision Pro are launching next month, it can reach more offices through its business-centric approach. Sony did not provide a release date or price for the headphones.
