As CES 2024 approaches, we’ll be hearing more talk about smart homes than the rest of the year combined. Samsung announced that it will partner with Tesla and Hyundai Motor to expand SmartThings into home energy and vehicle/home automation.
The partnership with Tesla will allow owners of the company’s electric vehicles and products such as Powerwalls and solar inverters to monitor and control their homes using Samsung’s SmartThings Energy app – displaying information related to energy production, storage and usage.
For example, Powerwall users will be able to sync the Tesla app’s “Storm Watch” feature to their home devices so they can receive alerts for extreme weather events such as hurricanes or snowfall through connected Samsung TVs and smartphones . It also lets you activate AI Energy Mode before and during a power outage to conserve remaining Powerwall energy.
Other companies will be able to do the same, as Tesla recently released its “FleetAPI” app, which will allow developers to interact with Powerwall, solar and wall connectors in addition to electric vehicles. However, Samsung is one of the first companies to get on board. “We are pleased that Samsung has chosen to become an early developer given its leadership in consumer smart home technology,” said Tesla’s Drew Baglino.
Samsung has also partnered with Hyundai Motor to extend its SmartThings platform to Hyundai electric vehicles and other vehicles to provide “home-to-car” and “car-to-home” services. This allows you to connect your smart home to your Hyundai car’s infotainment system so you can control one of them. For example, you’ll be able to start your car, control the air conditioning, open and close windows, and check charging status through the SmartThings app. From the car, you will be able to control home appliances like TV, AC, and EV chargers.
It also allows you to create a routine that activates your home’s lights and climate controls when your car arrives, or sets your car to the ideal temperature after your smartphone’s alarm goes off. At the same time, you’ll be able to monitor energy information about your electric vehicle and charger to set the best time to charge your vehicle based on energy pricing, solar panel data and more.
These new features sound useful, especially if you have an electric vehicle or Tesla power system installed. The product is still in development, but Samsung will show it off in advance at its CES 2024 booth next week.
