Samsung launched the Galaxy S24 device at its first Unpacked event of the year. As expected, all three smartphones have a strong focus on AI-driven features, from on-the-fly translation to image editing.
Samsung calls Galaxy AI the device’s overall artificial intelligence system, which powers many communications-centric features. Samsung said that on the one hand, Galaxy S24 devices will natively support real-time two-way translation during calls, without the need for third-party applications. Since most of the processing of AI features happens on-device with the help of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset and its Neural Processing Unit, conversations will remain private (except, of course, for eavesdroppers who might hear half of the chat other than those). You can choose to completely disable online processing of data for any AI features.
Likewise, on-device processing means you don’t need cellular data or a Wi-Fi connection to use AI features like Interpreter. This enables you to display split-screen translations of face-to-face conversations. Your device can also produce transcripts of audio recordings—which can be summarized or translated as needed.
When it comes to sending text-based messages quickly, Samsung says its Chat Assist feature can help you find the right tone. Samsung Keyboard can also translate messages between 13 languages. The note assist feature in Samsung Notes can summarize text, generate templates, and create covers to help you identify the notes you need.
Meanwhile, while you’re driving, Android Auto can aggregate incoming messages and suggest relevant responses and actions for you to approve via voice commands. These might include things like telling someone your estimated time of arrival.
The new search experience means you’ll be able to draw a circle around something on your screen and see related results from Google. Depending on your location and search query, you may see an AI-generated summary that pulls information from the web to provide context and more detail.
Artificial intelligence will also be the driving force behind the Galaxy S24 series camera system. Samsung says it will help with digital zoom, image stabilization, and shooting photos and videos in low-light conditions. The Super HDR feature is designed to help you see a realistic preview of your image before you press the shutter button.
This set of artificial intelligence tools may come in handy when it comes to image editing. Galaxy AI will suggest adjustments to improve the photo, while producing edits that can fill in parts of the image’s background. This can be handy if the lens is curved and you want to straighten it, as this feature allows you to move the subject and fix the background. It’s worth noting that you need an Internet connection to use Generate Fill. Additionally, whenever you use generative AI to modify a photo, your phone will apply a watermark to the image and its metadata.
If you want to slow down a movie with a lot of activity, the instant slow-motion feature can be helpful. Samsung says this produces extra frames based on the action in the original footage to smoothly slow down the action. Last but not least, the camera system in some Galaxy S models features HDR functionality integrated with third-party social apps. This means that when you look for images in your gallery or Instagram feed or reels, you will see photos and videos in Super HDR.
It’s no surprise that Samsung is going all-in on artificial intelligence in its latest Galaxy phones. The company previewed its artificial intelligence models in late 2023, with news at the time indicating that Samsung would deploy the capabilities broadly in the coming months. Additionally, Samsung will need to keep up with Google, which has been focusing more on artificial intelligence capabilities in its Pixel phones over the past few years. The latest Pixel models are also capable of on-device AI processing.
