Qualcomm will bring new VR/MR chips to CES 2024 in Las Vegas next week. The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 is an update to the standard XR2 Gen 2 released in September. The chip is suitable for virtual reality headsets, mixed reality headsets and other wearable devices.

Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 supports 4.3K resolution per eye, compared to the 3K resolution per eye of the previous version, and can integrate up to 12 cameras simultaneously (up from 10) for pass-through and body tracking. To this end, Qualcomm promises that devices equipped with this chip will be able to enter full color pass-through in less than 12 milliseconds.

As for standard specs, the XR2+ Gen 2 will be able to handle content up to 90 fps. The chip also shows improvements in raw performance, with roughly 20 percent faster CPUs and 15 percent faster GPUs compared to last year’s chips. Notably, all of this is on a single wafer to save space. There isn’t enough space in many VR headsets for this stuff.

Qualcomm only showed off the chip at CES and has yet to announce any accompanying devices. However, the company said it is working with Samsung and Google to develop XR2+ Gen 2 products. The previous XR2 Gen 2 chip powered the recently launched Meta Quest 3 virtual reality headset, so this upgrade should allow for the launch of more powerful standalone headsets in the near future.

We will provide live coverage of CES 2024, which will be held in Las Vegas from January 6th to 12th.Get all the latest news from the show here.
