Microsoft has begun testing a change in Windows 11 that will automatically turn on its artificial intelligence-powered Copilot feature when Windows is launched on a “wide-screen device.” The change is being tested as part of Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 Dev Channel preview, allowing Windows testers to provide feedback ahead of a wider rollout.
“We’re experimenting with automatically opening Copilot when launching Windows on wide-screen devices, and working with some Windows Insiders in the Developer Channel,” Microsoft said in a blog post. The company didn’t clarify exactly what a “wide-screen” device is. , but the Windows 11 settings themselves say that Copilot will automatically turn on “when you use a wider screen.” So I’m assuming this is limited to ultrawide monitors and less traditional desktop resolutions, but I’ve asked Microsoft for clarification and will update you accordingly.
Either way, this is another way for Microsoft to try to promote its artificial intelligence technology, which may attract criticism from Windows users, and if Microsoft goes ahead with this change, you may have to disable another one in Windows thing. This isn’t too different from the aggressive push for Microsoft Edge in Windows 11, where it launches automatically if you use Windows Widgets or Windows Search instead of being the default browser.
The latest changes to Copilot come just days after Microsoft announced a new Copilot key for Windows PCs and laptops that launches a chatbot-like experience when pressed. Laptop makers like Dell and Lenovo have already launched laptops with the new passenger key, with more expected to launch in the coming months.
Microsoft also appears to be adding more customization options to Copilot within Windows soon. X (formerly Twitter) user Albacore tuna found An unannounced chat provider option suggests Microsoft may open Copilot to third-party plug-ins or chatbots within Windows.
