GE Appliances is bringing its indoor smoker to consumers nationwide after an Indiegogo campaign raised more than $800,000. The device, originally called the “Arden” as a project of GE Appliance’s “makerspace and microfactory” FirstBuild, is now called the GE Profile smart indoor smoker. While the design has been updated somewhat, the basic idea remains the same: a larger countertop appliance that can smoke food in the kitchen without setting off a house or apartment fire alarm.
The GE Profile smart indoor smoker is about the size of a compact mini-fridge and features so-called active smoke filtration technology, which uses a “catalyst system” to generate wood smoke from particles and combines it with an electric heating element. The airflow settings are designed to impart “maximum flavor” to a variety of foods, while the tight gasket keeps smoke inside. GE Appliances says the unit is suitable for all skill levels thanks to five smoke presets. There are also six food-specific settings for popular smoked items like brisket, ribs, pork butt, chicken wings, chicken breast, and salmon. The smoker’s customization features also allow users to prepare side dishes and desserts using the device, the company said.
Additionally, there are some conveniences that outdoor smokers don’t offer. The Smoke and Hold feature prepares food and then holds it at food-safe temperatures for up to 24 hours. GE Appliances says the smoker also uses a small section of wood pellets as an outdoor grill, thanks in part to an additional heating element and a pellet capture system that extinguishes spent pellets in the tank. Finally, all racks and drip trays are dishwasher safe, these parts are often large for outdoor smokers and require hand cleaning.
As the name suggests, the GE Profile smart indoor smoker has a connected aspect. With the GE Profile Connect+, you can adjust smoke levels and monitor the cooking process because the unit includes a food probe. The company said it will provide feature updates such as guided recipes in the future. This is an indoor device, but you don’t have to sacrifice capacity. GE Appliances says there’s enough room for three racks of baby back ribs, a brisket, up to 40 chicken wings or a 14-pound pork butt. Since most pork butts you find at the grocery store are around eight pounds or less, there’s plenty of room for pulled pork.
The GE Profile smart indoor smoker will be available at retailers this month for $1,000. The device will be on display at CES, so hopefully we’ll get an early look at it and experience what it can do. If you’re already convinced, you can order a copy now.
We will provide live coverage of CES 2024, which will be held in Las Vegas from January 6th to 12th.Get all the latest news from the show here.
