Ford’s F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck is one of the few vehicles to retain its $7,500 U.S. tax credit through 2024, but many of the advantages are about to be offset. According to one report, the price of the 2024 model will rise from $49,995 to $54,995 (before freight and incentives), while the next model, the XLT, will see a hefty $10,000 jump to $64,995. detroit free press have been seen edge. However, buyers eyeing the premium version of the F-150 Lightning are in luck. The Platinum model with an EPA-estimated range of 300 miles drops from $91,995 to $84,995, while the Platinum Black (pictured above) drops from $5,000 to $92,995. Ford has added a new model to its lineup called the F-150 Lightning Flash (above), which includes “much-needed technology features” such as an extended-range battery with an EPA-estimated range of 320 miles, BlueCruise hands-free acceleration Highway driving and a standard 15.5-inch touch screen. However, the automaker dropped two models entirely from the lineup, the Lariat with a 240-mile range and the XLT 312 with a 320-mile range. The 2024 model is not yet available on Ford’s website.
Ford CEO Jim Farley recently said the company must reduce the number of Lightning models to improve quality. Meanwhile, a spokesperson said the changes are designed to improve “sales growth, profitability and customers’ opportunities to receive IRA tax benefits.” CNBC News. “Following a record fourth quarter, the F-150 Lightning is the best-selling electric pickup truck in the U.S. and demand continues to grow.”
While Tesla sold a record number of electric vehicles in 2023, Ford’s electric vehicle sales were relatively weak and the company lost $3.1 billion last year. Still, Ford is one of the few automakers able to retain the full $7,500 tax credit for the F-150 Lightning, along with Tesla (for most of its lineup) and Chevrolet for its Bolt EUV and EV.
