CES is almost here, which means, among other things, there will soon be a bunch of new monitors vying for your attention. Dell hopes its new UltraSharp 40 Curved Thunderbolt Hub monitor will stand out.Announced days before CES 2024, the model is "The first 40-inch 5K monitor to pass five-star eye comfort certification," Dell claimed.

Five-star eye comfort is a new industry standard from TUV Rheinland. The aim is to highlight displays that help reduce signs of eye strain. Dell said it did three things to achieve this certification with its latest UltraSharp monitors. First, it doubles the refresh rate to 120Hz for smoother visuals. It incorporates an ambient light sensor that allows the display to automatically adjust screen brightness and color temperature to match lighting conditions. Dell cites studies that show this can help reduce the frequency of eye strain symptoms by up to 17 percent.

Last but not least, Dell says it upgraded the ComfortView Plus technology with the help of advanced LED backlighting, reducing blue light exposure from 50% to less than 35%. This also helps reduce signs of eye strain.

None of this will reduce the performance of the monitor. Dell says the UltraSharp 40 Curved Thunderbolt Hub has 99% of the DCI-P3/Display P3 color space and 1.07 billion colors. It is VESA DisplayHDR 600 certified, uses IPS black panel technology and a 2,000:1 contrast ratio.

In terms of connectivity, it supports Thunderbolt 4 with power transmission up to 140W. Ethernet connection speeds are up to 2.5 Gbps, and there are HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1 ports. Dell notes that pop-up front-facing USB-A and USB-C ports should make it easy to connect and charge devices.

If the 40-inch model might not meet your needs, you might want to consider Dell’s 34-inch model. The UltraSharp 34 Curved Thunderbolt Hub Monitor also features TUV Rheinland five-star eye comfort certification, IPS Black technology and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity. It’s not a 5K monitor, though, as it has a WQHD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440.

Both monitors will be available globally starting February 27. Pricing for the UltraSharp 40 Curved Thunderbolt Hub monitor starts at $2,400 in the United States and $3,290 in Canada. The 34-inch model sells for $1,020 in the U.S. and $1,400 Canadian north of the border.
