atNorth, a Nordic hosting, high-performance computing and artificial intelligence services provider, has partnered with Crusoe Energy Systems LLC (“Crusoe”) to host Crusoe Cloud GPU at atNorth’s ICE02 data center in Iceland.
This is Crusoe’s first project in Europe and the arrangement advances Crusoe’s mission to align the future of computing with the future of climate by using clean energy to power Crusoe’s high-performance computing infrastructure.
“I’m delighted that our pursuit of low-carbon energy has brought us to Iceland,” said Crusoe co-founder and president Cully Cavness (pictured, right). “Partnering with atNorth allows us to convert the concentrated energy needs of computing infrastructure directly into clean, renewable sources of geothermal and hydropower.”
“It is important for atNorth to partner with companies that share our approach to sustainability,” said atNorth CEO E. Magnús Kristinsson (pictured left). “Crusoe is committed to maximizing computing power while minimizing environmental impact. environmental impact, which makes them a perfect choice.”
The atNorth ICE02 site provides more than 80 megawatts of electricity using sustainable geothermal and hydropower produced in Iceland. The country also benefits from low-latency networks and fully redundant connections to its North American and European customer base via multiple submarine fiber optic cables.
“Artificial intelligence and machine learning are driving demand for data centers at a record pace,” said Chris Dolan, chief data center officer at Crusoe. “We are excited about atNorth’s initial commitment and look forward to further expanding capacity in the future.”
This follows atNorth’s recent acquisition of Gompute, a leading provider of high-performance computing (HPC) and data center services, and the announcement of three new sites: FIN04 in Kouvola, Finland, FIN02 in Helsinki, Finland, and DEN01 in Copenhagen, Denmark. This year, the company continues to be recognized for its strength in the sustainable data center industry by multiple award organizations, including the Edie Net Zero Awards, DCS Awards, Electrical Review and Data Center Review Excellence Awards, Technology Capital Awards, National Sustainability Awards Awards and the 2023 Energy Awards. The Tech Capital Award specifically recognizes Iceland’s advantages as a location for a data center, such as its rich natural resources and the fact that its energy is 100% generated from renewable sources, as well as its stable political situation, circular economy principles and redundant connections.
