Well, it’s certainly an interesting way to launch a new set of wireless headphones. Bose today announced its latest product collaboration with fashion and lifestyle brand Kith: Ultra Open Earbuds. The news was leaked during CES and the design is quite unique, with a set of headphones clipping onto your ears, leaving the ear canals open to let in outside noise. Details on key specifications are scarce, but this is what was revealed in the announcement made by the company.
Bose describes the Ultra Open earbuds as “an innovative cuff-shaped design with polished, soft edges and a stunning look.” Unlike previous “open-back” models, these earbuds attach to the sides of the ears rather than being secured with over-the-ear hooks. Bose says this makes the headphones more of a fashion accessory than an “audio wearable,” which explains the partnership. The company also says you can wear them with a hat, glasses, or jewelry without any problem because they’re further away from your ears. It also touts greater comfort and “all-day wear” since you don’t have to choose between adapting to your surroundings or listening to your audio content.
Detailed specifications are scarce at the moment, but Kith revealed a few on the website. The fashion house further describes the design as having “light-as-air grip” and “flexible joints” for easy on and off. With Bose Immersive Audio’s spatial sound and “an additional suite of state-of-the-art technologies,” you can expect to enjoy up to seven and a half hours of playback time. The iconic Bose branding on the earbuds and charging case has been replaced with the Kith logo with the same font style. Bose said this marks its first collaboration with a fashion brand, and notably, the company is allowing the collaboration to launch entirely new products rather than limited editions of existing products.
The Bose Ultra Open earbuds will be available on January 22 at Kith.com and select Kith stores for $300 in “extremely limited quantities.” My guess is that the company will launch a proper version with its own branding soon, but there was no mention of that in today’s announcement.
