After being briefly surpassed by Apple in 2023, Samsung once again occupied the top spot in global smartphone shipments. Preliminary data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Mobile Phone Tracker for the first quarter of 2024 shows that Samsung has regained the lead it has held since 2010.

According to reports, Samsung’s global shipments in the first quarter were 60.1 million units, accounting for 20.8% of the market share. Apple shipped 50.1 million units, accounting for 17.3% of the market share. Both companies’ revenue fell from the first quarter of 2023, but Apple’s decline was more significant (-9.6%) than Samsung’s (-0.7%). The top five brands in the first quarter remained consistent with those for the whole of 2023, namely Xiaomi (40.8 million units), Transsion (28.5 million units) and OPPO (25.2 million units). Transsion surpassed OPPO and entered fourth place.

IDC noted that these numbers show that the smartphone market is strengthening. “First, we continue to see value and average selling price (ASP) growth as consumers know they will keep more expensive devices longer. Second, there is a power shift among the top 5 companies, which This trend is likely to continue as market players adjust their strategies in a post-recovery world. “Xiaomi is making a strong comeback from its sharp decline over the past two years, while Transsion has maintained strong growth and stability in international markets. In contrast, the top two manufacturers both experienced negative growth in the first quarter, and it seems that Samsung is in a better position overall than in recent quarters.
