Windows 11 features come with default views, but you might have modified them. Follow the different sections of this guide to restore functionality to default values.
Restore Windows desktop to defaults
If the Windows desktop icon does not appear, right-click the desktop, point to View, and then select Show desktop icon.
To restore the desktop icon to its normal size and view, right-click the desktop, point to View, and then select medium icon and Add all icons to the grid.
Reset File Explorer to defaults
If you have been using the Explorer view, you may have changed its appearance by mistake. The screenshot below shows the current view of my File Explorer.
The folder is too large and File Explorer no longer displays item details. If your view looks like this, follow these steps to restore it to normal view.
- Right-click the Start menu and select File Browser.
- Then, click the menu and select an option.
- Next, select view tab and click Reset folder In the folder view section.When Windows prompts you to confirm, click Yes. File Explorer will be restored to its default view – see second screenshot below.
Unhide Windows 11 taskbar
If your Windows taskbar automatically hides, follow these steps to restore it to its normal setting (always visible):
- Point your mouse to the bottom of the screen to display the taskbar. Then, right-click on it and select Taskbar Settings.
- Then, expand Work column behavior Set partial sum andexamine Automatically hide taskbar applications settings.
Restore Windows Work Administrator to defaults
- Right-click the “Start” menu to open the Task Manager.
- Then, in the lower left corner, click Settings, scroll down the right pane, and clickReset all settings to default values”.Click to confirm the operation reset.

Most Windows features have a “Restore Defaults” option. If you mess up something, this is the quickest way to reset it to “normal” view.
