Shorts, YouTube’s TikTok rival, is becoming a more important part of the company’s profit plans. The company announced that a quarter of the channels in its partner program are now making money from short-form videos.
The milestone comes more than a year after YouTube creators generated ad revenue from Shorts. YouTube said that more than 3 million creators around the world are currently enrolled in the partner program, which means that the number of Shorts creators making money through the platform is approximately hundreds of thousands.
Because ads on Shorts appear between clips in the feed, the revenue share on Shorts is higher than on longer content on YouTube. Advertising revenue is aggregated and distributed among eligible creators based on factors such as views and music licensing. The company says this arrangement is more profitable for individuals than traditional arrangements.
But so far, it’s unclear how much revenue creators make from Shorts compared to other revenue-generating projects on the platform. YouTube declined to disclose details but said it has paid $70 billion to creators over the past three years.
Momentum for Shorts is likely to grow further in the coming months. TikTok itself has been trying to encourage more direct competition with YouTube, but its app faces non-zero chances in the United States. While the outcome is far from certain, YouTube will almost certainly attract former TikTok users and creators.
