    $50M refund checks for University of Phoenix students

    “The check is in the mail.” You’ve heard it before, but this time, it’s true if you’re one of the 147,000 University of Phoenix students who will receive a scholarship Total payments exceeded $50 million This is the result of an enforcement action taken by the Federal Trade Commission against online schools.

    In a 2019 lawsuit, the Federal Trade Commission accused the University of Phoenix of luring consumers with ads that falsely promoted job opportunities for students with national employers such as AT&T, Yahoo, Microsoft, Twitter and the American Red Cross. To resolve the case, the defendants agreed to pay $50 million in direct payments to some students and cancel an additional $141 million in balances owed directly to schools by eligible students.     • Enrolled in a master’s, bachelor’s or associate’s degree program for the first time between October 15, 2012 and December 31, 2016;
    • Payment of more than $5,000 through cash, grants, federal and private student loans, or military benefits;
    • Not obtain debt cancellation as part of the settlement agreement; and
    • There is no option to not have the University of Phoenix provide the student’s contact information to the FTC.
