Zack Snyder knows what he’s doing.Either to capitalize on his considerable popularity for the benefit of his art, or focusing on every detail in the movie, which the filmmakers are completely aware of.So, of course, when it comes to his New Movies, rebel moon, he knows better than anyone when he references previous science fiction novels. He also knew that most people watching the movie would be watching it on Netflix.what people expect This movie can connect with others. It was all swirling around in his head.
Snyder Chat with io9 via video Earlier this month, we took a deep dive into all of this. We discussed how consciously he paid homage in the film. We discussed the clues he left for himself for possible future exploration. We even discussed his fan base and whether it changed the way he makes movies. Read our interview with him below.
Germain Lucier, io9: rebel moon Definitely a love letter to science fiction. You can see the enthusiasm everywhere. But when you’re doing something that seems easier, like finding transportation at an alien bar (via Star Wars) or bowing to the big-beaked animal (via harry potter), are these intentional homages or are they things that you love and are deeply ingrained in your DNA?
Zack Snyder: I think it might be a combination. Like I feel like when you go to a bar and you know you’re in a bar you have to deconstruct it a little bit because you’re aware of it. So you turned it into a brothel. The ominous undertones of the bar become more obvious and necessary because you have to declare your awareness of where you are. That kind of thing is definitely self-aware because I think it helps the audience who are 100% aware of the mythology we’re playing with. We must be careful.
io9: Yes. So much care put into this world. Every line, every character, you feel like there is a story behind it.I know we’ll be there the second part However, do not destroy the second partwas there anything on the periphery of the film that you threw in there that you said, “Maybe one day I’ll explore that,” without a real plan?
Cheats: Oh my god. OK, sure. Well, I already talked about the Zanadites. [Note: We were unable to find the correct spelling of this alien species so are going by sound. We’ll update this post if we find a different official spelling.] The Zanadids were [the species of] The blue woman in the tavern. She might be a derivative Army of the Undead My concept was really this whole weird extra-dimensional jam where we were yelling at each other, me and [co-writers] Kurt [Johnstad] and Shay [Hatten], multiple times. They thought I was crazy, but I thought it was really funny in the movie. I thought, “We’re just going to put a Zanadet in the movie!”
io9: Just in case!
Cheats: We’ll see. Let the pieces fall where they belong. Every now and then, with all of our planning and all of our world-building and super careful detailing, it’s always fun to take a hammer and smash something sometimes because it feels good.
io9: Of course. That’s probably one of the things that sets you apart, and one of the reasons you’ve almost become more than just a filmmaker over the past few years. You are a brand. You are the star of this show. Does this change the way you make films? Do you feel like this responsibility is an added pressure?
Cheats: You know, I don’t think there’s any difference between the way I approach movies and the way I approach movies Dawn of the Dead, honestly. It’s like I only have one speed, one gear, and I just love doing this job. I love the mythology inherent in the story. I just love exploring it. That’s what excites me. I will do my best.
io9: Yes. And you’re also a filmmaker with a penchant for big spectacle. rebel moon True to that, but you’re also making a Netflix movie that most people will see on the small screen. Does making a film for Netflix change your approach in any way? What have you learned after working on a few movies for Netflix so far?
Cheats: Oh, not really. I mean, I made this movie specifically for this service. That’s how I did it. It has a big screen look. But I also did it on purpose because all I really wanted to do was bring as much of a cinematic experience as possible to the audience at home, you know?It really feels like Movie Movie. No compromise. I guess that’s the gift I want to give you sitting on the couch.
io9: I read in another interview that you can tell me if I’m wrong, but you said rebel moon Set in the same universe as your first Netflix movie, Army of the Undead.
Cheats: Yes, that’s probably true. That would be even more ridiculous. Area 51 has a dimensional rift that allows you to reach it rebel moon the universe, but it’s not a straight line [line].
io9: Okay.Yes, because we saw alien spacecraft Army of the Undead I’m wondering if these ships are intentionally vague or if you know of any way they can be compared to rebel moon?
Cheats: Yeah, I don’t know. This is tricky.
io9: No problem. Now, in interviews, you’re almost always asked about director’s cuts, sequels, and follow-ups, all of which will be in the movie.
Cheats: Yes, all of them.
io9: Yes, but my question is have you ever considered the opposite? Just make it one big movie instead of two movies and a whole universe and all that?
Cheats: When I originally wrote it, I kind of irresponsibly wrote a 200 page script, so once I did that, I was kind of stuck and I didn’t want to delete anything. So I thought, “The only way I can move forward is to split this into two movies.” And, you know, Netflix was really cool with the idea that we were going to make two movies, which was great because we could advertise it . Like, I really believe that these two movies cost basically what a regular big sci-fi movie would cost because we were able to spread so much across those two movies. So in the end, we’re going to have four movies because we have these two movies and then two director’s cuts that are an hour long each, so you do get more. Gain a deeper understanding of the universe.
io9: Yes, I’d be interested to see this. Well, again, the other thing that everyone always talks to you about is your DC movies. People call it the “Snyder Universe,” but those aren’t your characters. These yes your role. Are you considering it now? rebel moon Becoming a true Snyderverse?
Cheats: Wow, that’s a cool question. It could be. Absolutely. I mean, if there is such a thing. I don’t actually own the copyright to the “Snyderverse” concepts. Fans certainly do. So I steal it discreetly. But yeah, it’s a fun thing to talk about. But I think ultimately, I reserve that name for all things DC related.
io9: Alright alright.
Cheats: But that’s just now, so who knows?
io9: [Laughs] Yes. Everything can change. Well, like I said before, this movie is a science fiction love letter. What a spectacle. It’s about honor and family. But aside from making sure people come back in April to watch the sequel, what do you hope most people leave this movie with?
Cheats: I think so. I think, you know, the way you understand the genre on this level, in this deep love, this passionate embrace of the genre (fantasy, science fiction), that really brings the movie to what it is, just Like, the ultimate incarnation of weirdness, you know? I’ve always thought of sci-fi and fantasy as the tip of the spear. It’s kind of like the top of the genre, if you can do that. So for me, it was really an incredible honor and super fun to play in that world.
io9: This leads me to my last question, which is my first thought rebellious moon, Or its concept is in Star Wars universe. Of course, this didn’t happen.but if it is in Star Wars Universe, what’s the biggest difference between that movie and what fans are seeing on Netflix?
Cheats: I think ultimately, the tone is going to be a lot different, because I think my natural subconscious tone is closer to an R rating. I just can’t control myself. This would have been problematic at the time Star Wars universe. There would be no brothels.
