The two things that shocked me the most in the film were, first, that Paul missed his Uber. I’ve seen this movie three times and it never occurred to me that Paul had to chase the sandworm and screw it up because of his inexperience. I like the idea behind it. To get the dunes to fall just right, there were three trucks off-screen pulling the giant cylinder away, and it’s one of those things you can’t learn from a book, you just have to figure it out when you’re preparing to make the movie.
These are just two of the many interesting revelations here. Some other ideas are that Villeneuve refused to use artificial light, so they could only work on site at certain times of the day, a testament to his precision. All his instant drawings and descriptions of the gimbals used are also very interesting.
