Last year, Elon Musk reduced free API access and released new paid plans, with the basic tier starting at $100 per month. The company later this year released a $5,000-per-month Pro plan with higher limits.
However, if the developer reaches the limit for the month, no more tweets can be obtained. They either have to wait or upgrade to a more expensive tier.
The social network said that with the launch of the new stored-value service, the number of upgrades developers can purchase will also be limited. Developers at the basic level can recharge up to 10 times per month, and developers at the professional level can recharge up to 5 times per month.
X’s API changes have greatly impacted the third-party developer ecosystem, and many tools (such as Tracy Chou’s Block Party) have pivoted to focus on other social platforms.
The company’s changes to its API rules also affect researchers and their ability to study platform material. However, the company must be open to researchers in the EU due to the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) rules.
