Elon Musk’s own social network X is rolling out the ability to make audio and video calls directly from the app to its Android client.
An X engineer involved in the project posted information about the feature’s release and said it would be available to Android users after an update to the app.
CEO Linda Yaccarino first talked about introducing video calling to the platform in August 2023, and it was eventually rolled out to iOS users in October.
It’s worth noting that any user can receive calls, but only paying users can make calls. It’s one of a long list of actions that only paid users can perform on the X. However, X removed the ability for premium users to set NFTs as profile pictures earlier this month.
Users can enable or disable calling via Settings > Privacy & Security > Private Messages > Enable Audio & Video Calls. The same menu gives people control over who can call them: people in their address book, people they follow, and verified users. They can choose multiple options from these choices.
X still has ambitions to be the “everything app.” Earlier this month, the company released its vision for 2024, which includes launching new xAI-powered features such as peer-to-peer payments, “showing different posts,” and more advertising products for marketers.
There are reports that after Musk told advertisers to “fuck off” at an event in November 2023, advertisers are leaving X and instead choosing to spend money on platforms such as LinkedIn.
