we snicker Conceptually when we first heard Wonkawe are confused as soon as we see it this trailer–especially the part that reveals Hugh Grant’s Ooompa-Loompa character. But one should never doubt the power of chocolate…or a singing, dancing Timothée Chalamet, because Wonka very popular.

Spoilers for this week: July 29

directed by Paddington and paddington bear 2Paul King, Wonka— which opens in theaters on December 15 — has surpassed the $100 million mark at the U.S. box office variety show reports The film’s global box office has topped $270 million, which is good news for Warner Bros., which has another blockbuster starring Chalamet set for release in March. But at the same time Dune: Part 2 Expected to perform well considering the success of its predecessor, WonkaThe win was a bit surprising.

Given the timing and the current box office situation, maybe it shouldn’t be: Wonka is a family-friendly musical that tells the backstory of the beloved Roald Dahl character, so it has great appeal for those looking to take their kids over the winter holidays. Another Warner Bros. musical currently released, Purple, also performed well; the domestic box office for its Christmas release was close to $30 million. However, the news isn’t so positive for Warner Bros.’ third film: James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is ending the current chapter of the DC Extended Universe with a little whimper. Since launching on December 22, it has brought in just over $50 million (a fraction of its $200 million-plus budget). Maybe Warner Bros. should make it a musical too?
