So when Campbell saw Traveling through the Spider-Verse, it was a bit like watching his wildest dreams come true. “My dream is to see a world with countless Spider-people hanging out enjoying each other’s company, so I’ve never been more excited to see each Spider-Man chase Miles,” he said. “The chase to end all chases.”

Soon, Campbell knew which moment he wanted to capture for an upcoming art show, but unlike more traditional images, this one required some extra digging. “I started by freezing the chase scene and trying to find all the Spider-Men. It was a crazy task trying to figure them all out,” he said. “So I was searching the internet, reading all the lists people had made of Spider-Man. Luckily, I’d met producer Chris Miller before and asked him about any ideas they might have developed internally. A list that might help, and he also connected me with one of the directors, Justin K. Thompson. Sure enough, they had a whole list of things to do! It was a real lifesaver. Those Spider-Man, It’s all laid out. I’m very grateful to them.”

Just like that, the work began, and here’s how it goes down in our exclusive io9 video.

Campbell enjoyed drawing all the different characters individually, but said the hardest part was putting them together. “Creating a character is always the hardest part, but it’s also the most fun,” he said. “I like to imagine them together, posing for pictures like this. I finished the drawing, but struggled with whether to have the classic animated Spider-Man point. I ended up thinking he must be pointing, so I had to make everyone move to accommodate The one who is pointing.” Now you can finally see it in the finished image…
