TikTok can generate AI songs, but it probably shouldn’t

TikTok is home to many songs that have gone viral over the years, but now it’s testing a feature that lets more people practice their songwriting skills with the help of artificial intelligence.

AI Song generates songs based on text prompts with the help of a large language model called Bloom. Users can write lyrics in the text field when posting. TikTok will then recommend AI Song to add sound to the post, and they can switch the genre of the song.

edge TikTok was contacted for comment. The feature was first spotted last week.

AI Song doesn’t appear to be available to everyone yet, but some TikTok users have already started giving it a try. So far, the results have been less than ideal. Despite the auto-tune feature, many people are still out of tune. Take this song from TikTok user Jonah Manzano, who created a song that tries to somehow give the word “comedy” more syllables than it needs to. Another user, Kristi Leilani, recreated a Britney Spears song, but the sound was once again severely off-key.

TikTok is not the only platform that offers users the ability to generate artificial intelligence. YouTube has begun testing a music creation feature that lets users compose songs based on text prompts or hummed tunes. Dream Track allows you to create 30-second clips in the style of other popular artists.

In an effort to be more transparent, TikTok has rolled out additional features to help identify AI-created content on the app and updated its rules to require users to be candid about the use of AI in their content.
