Today is Day 18 of Gizmodo’s March Madness Greatest Apps of All Time Challenge, and we’re saying goodbye to one of our biggest entrants! WhatsApp beat Instagram in yesterday’s competition. Today, we have the world’s largest mapping app to combat Android users’ existential woes.

If you’re just tuning in, you can read all of our selection criteria for this historic match Right here. See the full list of contestants embedded below. As always, if you think we’ve missed your personal favorite app, give us a shout in the comments. Now, let’s get into today’s contestants.

I don’t need to know about “Benefits of Slavery” without a Google AI search

Here’s what we said about Google Maps in the first round:

With over 1 billion monthly active users, our first entrant is the undisputed king of mapping apps. Launched in 2005, Google Maps is one of the oldest candidates in the competition, but it shows no signs of slowing down as it ages. If there’s one mobile app that can be said to have made the world a better place, it’s this one. The days of printing MapQuest directions were officially over when this bad boy came along. Even Apple hasn’t caught up.

Here’s what we say about iMessage:

With over a billion users, our first contestant is the envy of Android users everywhere and a thorn in Google’s side. Since its launch in 2011, iMessage has never really been considered the most advanced or secure messaging platform, but it’s certainly the most important, and it’s on every iPhone. Perhaps most importantly, it eliminates non-users by displaying them as green bubbles.this has become a Ridiculous status symbol For the little snob out there, Google seems to try something out every few months new tactics Let Apple open up iMessage or play nice.

But just because it’s become a status symbol, that doesn’t mean iMessage is a bad communication tool. It has many features like Memoji, location sharing, reactions, apps, and stickers. But more importantly, Apple recently deployed a new “post-quantum encryption protocol” designed to safeguard a future in which quantum computing can break today’s standards. At the time of publication, cryptography experts Call it “overkill”.

So, reader, what will it be? Does iMessage make you jealous and want to send Google Maps to the next round? Or does your blue bubble fill you with a feeling of superiority that you have to rub into everyone else’s faces?
