We’ve now reached the Sweet 16 phase of the tournament, and there are some surprises. But overall, most of our remaining contestants are very large and popular apps, so it’s getting harder to predict the winner in each category.
Here’s how we rated Instagram in the first round:
Instagram has 2.4 billion monthly active users. The king of photo-sharing apps, Instagram has gone through one hell of an evolution since its debut in 2010 and subsequent acquisition by Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta. Here’s what we think about WhatsApp:
In this corner of the world with some 2 billion users, we have the rulers of messaging apps. Launched in 2009, WhatsApp was initially designed to protect user privacy through a barebones platform focused exclusively on encryption. But its popularity grew explosively, and capital’s vultures began circling.
Facebook acquired the platform in 2014 for $19 billion, and co-founder Jan Koum publicly announced the news shortly after. admit He sold his soul to the devil and the user’s privacy to Zuckerberg. Another co-founder, Brian Acton, who later took a senior role at Signal, wanted to keep WhatsApp’s original dream alive, but the app has yet to achieve the same footing.
