Sony is reportedly developing a PlayStation 5 Pro model, which is likely to feature a more powerful GPU that is three times faster than the current PS5 model. YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead claims to have obtained a technical overview document for the PS5 Pro, codenamed Trinity, and now Tom Henderson is Insider Game The leaked specs are reportedly accurate and the console is currently set to be released during the 2024 holiday season.
A screenshot of the technical document mentions 67 teraflops of 16-bit floating point calculations, which is equivalent to about 33.5 teraflops of single-precision calculations. This reportedly results in a 45% improvement in rendering performance over the PS5. The existing PS5 is a 10.28 teraflop console, so the GPU performance alone will be tripled. Henderson reports that PS5 Pro may also offer up to 3x ray tracing performance (“4x in some cases”).
The documents, reportedly posted on Sony’s own developer portal, also mention PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). It is rumored that this is using PlayStation machine learning for image upscaling, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR. This will likely include an upgrade to 8K resolution in future releases and will help improve ray tracing performance on the rumored PS5 Pro hardware.
While Moore’s Law has expired isn’t always the most reliable source of console leaks, Henderson’s report suggests that Sony’s own first-party studios have been testing PS5 Pro development kits since September, with third parties acquiring them in January Access rights. Henderson reported last year that the planned release date for the PS5 Pro was November 2024. It sounds like Sony is likely to meet this ambitious timeline.
