friend worldOften referred to as the “Pokémon with a gun,” it finally has an Early Access release date. In addition to the violent combat, the game tackles themes of labor exploitation with a wry sense of humor while adding (maybe) enough changes to evade Nintendo’s lawyers. It launches in Early Access on January 19th on Steam and Game Pass.
At first glance, friend worldThe trailer makes the game look like a simple yet charming 3D open-world version of Pokémon. You’ll see battles with strange monsters, a bit like those in the creature-collecting series, including the player capturing them in a sphere upon victory.
but friend world It also takes things to dark places that Nintendo never dreamed of. For example, take developer Pocketpair’s Steam FAQ. In answer to the question “What type of game is this?” it writes: “Partners can be used for combat or given to work on farms or factories. You can even sell them or eat them!”
The FAQ section about construction reads: “Want to build a pyramid? Put an army of friends to work. Don’t worry; Pals have no labor laws.” Regarding factories and automation, it says: “Let Pals do the work. The key to automation. Build a factory, put a buddy in it, and they’ll keep working as long as there’s food to eat – until they die.” The game’s trailer shows off piles of Parr corpses to prove this point.
For another example of the game’s dark tone, watch the video above, “Using Friends Effectively.” “To build a great base, grab a friend and make it work,” the voiceover says, repeating the last part twice for emphasis. At the same time, we see various Pokémon-like monsters working hard to build the player’s headquarters.
“Creating a production base like this,” the narrator continues, as we see a yard full of good friends wielding hammers, “is the secret to living a comfortable life in the world of good friends.” Players surround them, armed with assault rifles to ensure they carry out their duties.
friend world Early Access will be available on January 19th at 00:00 PST. You can catch all of this content and put it to work on Steam and Game Pass (Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Windows).
