Samsung has announced three new gaming monitors ahead of CES 2024. These include the 49-inch curved ultra-wide Odyssey OLED G9 (G95SD), the 32-inch flat Odyssey OLED G8 (G80SD) and the 27-inch flat Odyssey OLED G6 (G60SD). The latter two are Samsung’s first flat-panel displays for its Odyssey series.
Because I’m a simple person with simple needs, on paper, the Odyssey OLED G6 is the model that interests me the most among these models. That’s because it has a decidedly high refresh rate of 360Hz, coupled with a 1440p resolution and 16:9 aspect ratio. Samsung Display announced last month it would begin mass production of these ultra-fast OLED panels, and companies like Dell and MSI appear to be using them in upcoming monitors as well.
Do I really think I can perceive the refresh rate difference between 240Hz and 360Hz refresh rates on OLED? Almost certainly not. But the bigger numbers still warm my heart.
The next product in the series is the Odyssey OLED G8, a 32-inch 4K flat panel display with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a 240Hz refresh rate. Then there’s the Odyssey OLED G9, which measures 49 inches, has a curved surface, a 240Hz refresh rate, a 32:9 aspect ratio, and a 5,120 x 1,440 resolution. There’s no 32-inch 1440p option like Samsung previously offered in the Odyssey G7.
Both high-end monitors will be equipped with many of Samsung’s smart features, including a built-in smart TV platform for accessing video streaming services, a game center for accessing cloud gaming services, and control for compatible IoT SmartThings Hub Device. There’s also a “Multi-Control” feature, which Samsung says will allow the display to transfer text and images between compatible Samsung laptops, tablets and phones.
All three monitors are VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certified, have a peak brightness of at least 400 nits, and support AMD FreeSync Premium Pro. They are equipped with two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 port, and have built-in USB hubs. Exact pricing or release dates haven’t been confirmed yet, but based on Samsung’s previous display release schedule, the products are expected to be available later this year.
