Arizona State University (ASU) and OpenAI announced a partnership to bring ChatGPT into ASU classrooms.
ASU said in a press release that it wants to focus on “three key areas” where ChatGPT Enterprise can be used, such as “improving student success, opening new avenues for innovative research, and streamlining organizational processes.”
Kyle Bowen, deputy chief information officer at Arizona State University edge, “Our faculty are already using ChatGPT, and after the launch of ChatGPT Enterprise, we solved a lot of security issues, and we believe it makes sense to connect with OpenAI.” He added that ASU faculty, some of whom have expertise in artificial intelligence) will help guide the use of generative artificial intelligence on campus.
The university will begin accepting project submissions from faculty and students in February on where to use ChatGPT. Anne Jones, vice provost for undergraduate education, said in an interview that some professors are already using generative AI in their classes. She mentioned composition courses that use AI to improve writing and journalism courses that use AI platforms to create multimedia stories. There may even be room for chatbots to serve as personalized tutors for ASU students, Jones said.
Jones and Bowen said universities provide an immediate testing ground for many generative AI use cases.
“The university wants to foster critical thinking, so we have never considered isolating ourselves from technology. We want to help determine the conditions under which this technology can be used in education,” Jones said.
Last year, Arizona State University launched an AI accelerator program to bring researchers and engineers together to create AI-driven services. The university has also started offering just-in-time engineering courses to improve artificial intelligence literacy.
This is OpenAI’s first collaboration with an educational institution. The company has slowly begun to partner with more public-facing organizations. It announced an agreement with the Pennsylvania government to provide ChatGPT Enterprise to select state employees.
