In 2020, Nikkei Research launched a novel people flow measurement solution called SKIA. Since then, it has been adopted by clients ranging from real estate developers and facility management companies to retail stores and other institutions.
A well-known user example is Haneda Future Development Co., Ltd., a joint venture of nine companies headed by Kajima Corporation. The company is currently developing a smart city, Haneda Innovation City (HICity), next to Haneda Airport, working with companies and startups using advanced technologies to introduce new possibilities for the future to the public. Nikkei’s SKIA has been operating at Foot Spa & Sky Deck since 2022, ahead of a planned grand opening in fall 2023. SKIA can analyze people flow and send the data to the visualization platform instantly. Using this technology in satellite control rooms, HICity can check facility congestion and prevent unnecessary incidents.

SKIA uses LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), a technology popular in self-driving cars that uses pulses of light invisible to the human eye to detect and measure objects around the instrument. It can classify people and static objects separately and record the movement or stillness of each person. Unlike a monitor, it does not collect personal data such as mugshots. The analysis algorithm was developed jointly with Professor Mihoko Niitsuma of Chuo University Laboratory and the Nikkei Research Institute. This solution outputs a visualization of the immediate status of a given space and the level of crowding over time.

There are many other common uses for this solution. It can be deployed in retail stores to observe customer numbers and customer behavior to evaluate campaign effectiveness or optimize shelf and staff distribution. In mixed-use retail facilities, it can measure foot traffic in each space to increase the time visitors spend in the facility and plan effective guidance. In offices, it can collect usage-related information that can be used to redesign office spaces to optimize functionality and increase employee engagement.
