Intel says Microsoft’s Copilot AI service will run natively on PCs Tom’s Hardcore. The company also said that the next generation of artificial intelligence PCs will require built-in neural processing units (NPUs) with processing capabilities of more than 40 TOPS (tera operations per second) – beyond the capabilities of any consumer processor on the market.
Intel said AI PCs will be able to run “more elements of Copilot” locally. Currently, Copilot runs almost everything in the cloud, even small requests. This creates quite a bit of lag, which is fine for larger jobs but not ideal for smaller ones. Adding local computing power will reduce this latency, while also potentially improving performance and privacy.
Previous rumors suggested that Microsoft was asking for 40 TOPS (and a modest 16GB of RAM) for the next generation AI PC. Currently, Windows does not take full advantage of the NPU except for running video effects such as background blur for the Surface Studio webcam. Both ChromeOS and macOS use NPU functions to implement more video and audio processing functions, as well as OCR, translation, real-time transcription and other functions. technical art famous.
The fastest processor with NPU so far is the Apple M3, which offers 18 TOPS across the entire series (M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Ultra). AMD’s Ryzen 8040 and 7040 laptop chips follow, reaching 16 and 10 TOPS respectively, while Intel’s Meteor Lake laptops also hit 10 TOPS. Qualcomm may provide Copilot with the first processor with sufficient power through Snapdragon X Elite, which will provide an AI computing speed of 45 TOPS.
Intel’s Lunar Lake chips will be available in 2025, and their NPUs will be three times faster than today. Yesterday, the company launched 300 new artificial intelligence features optimized specifically for its OpenVino platform. The chip giant also released an ASUS NUC Pro-based AI PC development kit that uses its current Meteor Lake chips.
“From a desktop perspective, we have plans on the desktop side and we would say [is an] Artificial intelligence computer. And then there’s also the requirement for next-generation AI PCs, 40 TOPS; we have all the different steps in our roadmap on how to cover all the different segments,” the company told Tom’s Hardcore.
