There are a lot of famous trash talkers out there. Some professional athletes and the grumpy green denizens of Sesame Street come to mind. But when the FTC trash talks (as we did at our national workshop on May 23, 2023), our intention is to consider the current state of recycling practices and recycling-related advertising. We just announced the Federal Trade Commission’s “Talk About Trash: Recycling Statements and Green Guidelines” agenda, and we hope you’ll watch the half-day event in person or online.

The workshop was part of the agency’s regulatory review of its Guidelines for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims, known as the “Green Guidelines” since they were first published in 1992. Speakers include local and state law enforcement officials, environmental advocates, industry representatives and other experts, according to the agenda.

Jim Kohm, director of the FTC’s Division of Consumer Protection Enforcement, will hold a seminar and deliver opening remarks at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time. The first group will consider Recycling market status and claims. The second panel will delve deeper into Consumer perceptions of recycling claims. The final group will discuss The future of green guides. After closing remarks, the seminar will end at 12:45 noon.

Talking Trash at the FTC: Recycling Statements and Green Guides are open to the public, no registration required. You can attend in person at the FTC Constitution Center Auditorium, 400 7th Street, Washington, DC. Alternatively, you can watch the webcast via a link that will be live prior to the 8:30 ET start time on May 23.

You have until June 13 to submit public comments on the topics discussed at the event.
