xAI is an artificial intelligence startup and one of Elon Musk’s many projects that will be open source Gronk. These are all true now.
It’s not entirely surprising that Musk open-sourced Grok — a ChatGPT-like chatbot modeled after The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. According to xAI.The move comes days after Musk sues OpenAI No longer an open source nonprofit.
“This week, @xAI is open sourcing Grok,” Musk posted on X, on Monday morning.

By making Grok open source, the public will have free access to the code that holds everything together.as Reuters pointed out, open source technology like Grok has the opportunity to help accelerate innovation in this field because more people can access it.But the same accessibility can be used bad actoralso.
Musk didn’t elaborate on which aspects of Grok would be open source, what that would look like, or what the consequences might be. But he did reply to someone’s post on X about open source Grok and said “OpenAI is a lie,” so it’s obviously related to the dispute between OpenAI and Musk. Musk co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman, and a lot has changed since then—many of which Musk doesn’t seem particularly happy with.
What exactly is a Grok anyway?
“To this day, OpenAI’s website still claims that its charter is to ensure that AGI ‘benefits all mankind.’ However, in fact, OpenAI has transformed into a de facto closed-source subsidiary of Microsoft, the world’s largest technology company,” Musk said in the lawsuit wrote, According to TechCrunch.
As far as Musk is concerned, his support for open source is basically the same – Many of Tesla’s patents are open source.
