Nearly 18 months after Ford India ceased operations at its manufacturing plant near Chennai, the US giant is on an expansion and hiring spree in the city through Ford Business Solutions (FBS).

A senior executive from Ford’s global team told Business Standard that FBS, which oversees the company’s global capabilities through its 12,000-strong workforce in Tamil Nadu, plans to launch global technology and operations in Chennai over the next three years. The business center will employ an additional 3,000 people.

Talent acquisition in India is aimed at driving the company’s roadmap in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

India is home to Ford’s second-largest workforce globally.

“The expansion has two dimensions. Over the next few years, we plan to expand our center to about 3,000 people. The more important aspect is the type of work we do at the FBS center using artificial intelligence and machine learning technology,” said Mike Amend, chief corporate technology officer, Ford Motor Company.

“We are adding these high-skill and knowledge jobs,” he added.

The group is on a hiring spree after Ford India shut down its manufacturing plant at Maraimalai Nagar in 2022.

Ford India announced the phase-out of the unit on September 9, 2021, and would cease production in August 2022.

FBS is the Group’s global talent office, supporting all functions of the company. It has centers in Chennai, Mexico City and Hungary that not only support technology but also enterprise technology, global data insights and analytics, finance and human resources, among others.

Interestingly, when Ford India announced its exit in September 2021, FBS had only about 11,000 employees in India at that time and had added 1,000 employees in Chennai.

When asked about the main reason for increasing hiring in India, Amend added, “It will be for cutting-edge work like our digital transformation and everything we build under digital offerings.”

FBS is also expanding the functions of Ford Credit, the financial services arm of Ford Motor Company, at its Chennai unit. Similar expansion is happening with Ford Pro, Ford’s commercial business unit, which provides productivity solutions for enterprise fleets of all sizes.

“The FBS team also provides assistance with the types of functionality required to manage the fleet. We are providing software services in this area as we consider our charging solutions. We have begun to integrate and work very closely with our dealers. Vehicle Configuration, ordering of vehicles, much of that is now being built in our Ford Business Center,” Armend said.

According to media reports, the U.S. auto giant’s cloud-first strategy will help drive its shift toward “software-defined vehicle” manufacturing.

When asked about this, he added: “We are migrating a lot of applications and functionality and looking to modernize payroll systems. We are moving away from global workloads as much as possible.”

There were earlier reports that Ford India may be reconsidering its decision to sell the Chennai plant and evaluate options of using the plant for exports or returning to the Indian market.

“I don’t know if Ford will come back,” Armend said.
