What’s new in OpenAI Read aloud function ChatGPT comes in handy when users are on the go by reading their responses aloud to them in one of five voice options. It is now available on the web version of ChatGPT as well as the iOS and Android ChatGPT apps.
Read Aloud can speak 37 languages, but will automatically detect the language of the text you are reading, and this feature works with GPT-4 and GPT-3.5. It’s an interesting example of what OpenAI can accomplish with multimodal capabilities (the ability to read and respond through multiple mediums), which OpenAI revealed shortly after rival Anthropic added similar capabilities to its AI models at this point.
ChatGPT launched a voice chat feature in September 2023, allowing users to directly ask the chatbot for tips without typing. But new features will allow people to have ChatGPT read written answers aloud, and users can set the chatbot to always respond verbally when responding to prompts.
On the mobile app, people can tap and hold text to launch the read-aloud player, where they can play, pause, or rewind the read-aloud content. The online version displays a speaker icon below the text.
