A $3 iOS app can now record higher-resolution spatial videos than Apple’s native camera app. Spatialify, available on the App Store, allows iPhone 15 Pro users to use HDR to record 3D videos in 1080p, 60fps or 4K, 30fps for Apple Vision Pro. Apple’s native recording only supports 1080p/30fps and not HDR, so immersive clips shot with Spatialify will be sharper than with the camera app on the same phone. Upload VR The app update was first reported.
Launched earlier this year, Spatialify is a tool that converts Apple spatial videos (HEVC format) for playback on non-Apple VR headsets such as the Meta Quest 3. But Meta later added native HEVC conversion to its headphones (the best-selling headphones on the market), and Spatialify’s superior recording capabilities gave third-party apps a new lease of life.
Engadget senior editor Devindra Hardawar confirmed that Spatialify will produce files at 4K / 30fps when configured accordingly. He also confirmed that Spatialify videos look much clearer on the Vision Pro than videos shot in Apple’s Camera app. HDR also makes the film’s lighting look more realistic. Not bad for three dollars.
It’s a bit surprising that Apple would prevent its native camera app from taking advantage of the full hardware capabilities of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, but it’s not unheard of. Halide is a popular iOS camera app that beats Apple with iOS photography features like RAW shooting, manual controls, and pet portrait photos. Based on this history, I wouldn’t be shocked if Apple added similar advanced spatial recording capabilities to its cameras soon, especially now that we know its current hardware is fine.
Spatialify is available on the App Store for $3. It requires iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max to shoot space videos.
