Technology changes at the speed of light, but the touchstones of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act rules remain the same. Parents are responsible when it comes to the collection of their children’s personal information online. But how does this principle apply to technologies not originally anticipated by the COPPA rules? Whether it’s social media, the Internet of Things or educational technology, do changes in media and markets require updated rules?
FTC staff raised this and other issues months ago, and now is the time to discuss it. On October 7, 2019, we will be hosting the Future of COPPA Rules: FTC Workshop, and you will want to check out the just-released agenda.
FTC Commissioner Christine Wilson will open the event and provide remarks at 9:00 a.m. ET.Following a presentation by Dr. Jenny Radesky, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School, Panel 1 will examine The state of the world of children’s privacy. One panellist of particular note: Jo Pedder, Director of Regulatory Strategy at the UK Information Commissioner’s Office.
Next on the agenda: remarks by FTC Commissioner Noah Phillips, followed by Panel 2, which will explore Scope of the COPPA Rulese.
The afternoon session will begin with comments from Morgan Reed, President of the Applications Association ACT.Group 3 will then discuss Definitions, exceptions and misunderstandings.
Jonathan Mayer, Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Princeton University, will give a speech Technology Trends Since the Revision of the COPPA Rulese. Panel 4 will consider Uses and misuse of persistent identifiers.
Closing remarks from Maneesha Mithal, Deputy Director of the Federal Trade Commission’s Division of Privacy and Identity Protection, will give us a comprehensive view of the day.
