64% of organizations expect multi-cloud use to increase over the next two years

62% of organizations are currently using multi-cloud environments, and another 18% are actively transitioning to multi-cloud environments.

That’s the conclusion of OVHcloud’s recently released executive report on the state of multi-cloud, which surveyed the views of more than 500 IT decision-makers at large UK organizations.

“Using the right cloud for the right workload is quickly being accepted as the best way to do business today,” said Matt Tebay, director of sales at OVHcloud.

“Nearly two-thirds (64%) of organizations believe the use of multi-cloud will increase over the next two years, so while it brings considerable complexity, the benefits are clear for today’s companies. In fact, only 3% of organizations say their use of multicloud will decrease over the next two years, and less than 1% have no plans to use multicloud at all.”

Half of the studies cited the flexibility of multi-cloud, allowing organizations to run workloads in the right cloud environment, as one of its key benefits, followed closely by increased agility (41%). Cost efficiencies, better infrastructure on an OPEX basis (40%) and reduced organizational risk by reducing points of failure (39%) were also cited as key benefits.

“Running the right applications on the right cloud can deliver significant operational benefits to organizations,” Tebay continued. “While working across multiple cloud environments may require a higher level of skills and training, if done right it can lead to enhanced agility and solid business ROI.”

However, the report also highlights some of the challenges of multi-cloud environments, with 27% of IT decision-makers highlighting technical complexity as one of their main concerns or risk areas, and 31% concerned that larger physical spaces mean more Endpoint security, therefore, more possible vulnerabilities.

“This complexity may explain why less than half (46%) of the studies admitted to still being on the road ‘towards multi-cloud,’ taking one step at a time,” Tebay concluded. “Despite this, nearly a quarter One (23%) of IT decision-makers say they are ‘smooth sailing’ with multi-cloud and are seeing significant benefits, demonstrating the true impact of a mature, well-thought-out cloud – the way forward for multi-cloud.”

The study, conducted by market research firm Censuswide, surveyed 504 IT decision-makers in large organizations with 201 to 700 employees.
